Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Spain
Description
Tenerife enjoys an almost year-round spring climate and a calmer urban pace than Las Palmas. Rents remain moderate in traditional districts (La Salle, Duggi, Barranco Grande) but climb along the Rambla-Central axis and in neighbouring La Laguna, the university town. Average wages are lower than on mainland Spain, yet the 7 % IGIC sales tax and inexpensive public transport (city buses plus the Santa Cruz–La Laguna tram) soften expenses. A car is handy for reaching southern beaches or Teide National Park, adding fuel and inspection costs. Grocery bills rise for imported goods, but local fruit, fresh fish and farmers’ markets cheapen a Mediterranean diet. Tourism underpins much of the economy, providing jobs but also creating seasonal dependence and rental pressure.
